Family cottage at Schoone Oordt

Family friendly accommodation just 2 hours from Cape Town

Looking for some well priced, family friendly accommodation? Then this post is just for you! We spent our first night away as a family of 4 at the wonderful Schoone Oordt in Swellendam. I have stayed at the property many times before we had kids so never thought about what a wonderful family getaway property is it, until now!

Family rooms

Bunk beds in family suiteThey have a family cottage and a family suite. We stayed in the suite and it was perfect. Neither the cottage nor the suite have an in-room fire place; initially I felt disappointed because I love a fire place, however, it’s actually so thoughtful because you don’t want to risk your little human burning themselves. The suite has a kids bedroom with 2 sets of bunks which Tristan just loved! The cottage has a loft with 2 single beds for kids and a separate bedroom (downstairs) for parents.

Thoughtful touches

Thoughtful touchesHaving worked in the 5-star luxury travel industry for many years my attention to small, thoughtful details is highly tuned. On arrival we were welcomed by the GM, Ian, who directed us to the back parking area as it’s closer to the room we were in. Once in our room a bottle of MCC on ice was delivered for us to enjoy along with a hand written note. The kids room had toys and books for Tristan and a range of child-friendly DVD’s were waiting at the TV. The bathroom had a kiddies basin as well as a kiddies bathrobe which Tristan thought was awesome. At turndown 2 truffles were left for us.

Food glorious food

It’s no secret that I LOVE food and Schoone Oordt’s breakfasts are something to be talked about. It’s 3 courses; yes please!! First course is ‘help yourself’ to cereals, yoghurt, freshly baked bread & scones, cold meats & cheeses. Alison (the owner) makes her own muesli and it is the best I’ve ever eaten. Next course is a served baked fruit of sorts. We had a poached pair the first morning and stewed fruit crepes on our return 2 weeks later. The 3rd and final course is a hot breakfast. It changes daily but should you not like the option you’re able to order any standard breakfast items instead.  Tristan loves his oats and they happily made him oats to order and a side of bacon!

We also had dinner there on our first night and the food was delicious. We both had steak and they made chicken nuggets & chips for Tristan.

And we’re back again

When we returned on our way back to Cape Town we arrived in time for high tea… what a delicious occasion. Fresh scones with jam, cheese & butter alongside a mouthwatering carrot cake were on display in the lounge. There was also teas & coffees available.

So if you’re looking for a great family getaway boutique hotel, consider Schoone Oordt. Being just 2,5 hours from Cape Town it’s the perfect stop with small kids before they get too bored in the car. There is also plenty to do in the area such as the Faerie Sanctuary, Adventure Farm, Wildebraam Berry Farm and much more!
